'Humans in the World' with Professor Richard Smith

Professor Richard Smith MD, DSc, FRCOG is one of the world's leading gynecological surgeons and a tour leader for Jon Baines Tours. He is now a Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon and Professor of Practise at Imperial College.

Hailing from Scotland, Richard studied medicine at Glasgow, returned to complete his MD in 1992, and returned again to complete his Higher Doctorate. He and his team successfully performed the world's first living womb transplant (between two sisters) in 2023.

As well as being global leader in obstetrics and gyneacology, Richard is a warm and engaging human being who is as comfortable speaking to a judge as to a homeless person. In this section, Richard speaks to us from his Little Venice houseboat, which is his home when in London. He spends the rest of his time in his beloved Scotland, in his family home on the island of Bute.

Richard also has a keen interest in contemplative prayer, chant and pilgrimage and has published two books on the subject, in addition to his numerous medical publications. Richard has four children, who he loves dearly.

Richard has led several successful tours for Jon Baines Tours and is excited to be leading Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Egypt in November 2026.
