Peru: land of gold and the sun-worshipping Incas, builders of the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. From the colonial grandeur of Lima to the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, it is an extraordinary destination.
This tour is a study of women's health in a country where it has a long and complicated history. Lima's Casa de Maternidad opened in 1826 with the first midwifery school in the Americas. In the 1990s a national sterilisation programme left a legacy of injustice that the courts are still working through. Peru has since reshaped maternity care around Andean and Amazonian birthing traditions, and it is rebuilding after a pandemic-era rise in maternal deaths. Cervical screening, adolescent pregnancy, access to therapeutic abortion and the regulation of fertility treatment remain live questions.
Visits range from the Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal, a leading Lima fertility clinic, to Kausay Wasi Hospital in the Sacred Valley and the APAINE rehabilitation project, alongside meetings with Andean herbalists and healers.
This tour is a wonderful opportunity to travel with your peers, experience the history and culture of Peru and marvel at its spectacular scenery. Peru is also celebrated for its cuisine, which you will enjoy alongside time at local markets and at leisure.
Take a journey from Lima, a modern city with a colonial past, through the Andes to Cusco and on to Machu Picchu, the most magnificent legacy of the Incas. Visit Lake Titicaca, the largest navigable lake in the world, and explore the traditional communities, who live on the lake much as they have done for centuries.

Visit the Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal, Peru's leading public maternal hospital, whose origins go back to the first maternity house and midwifery school in the Americas.

Visit Kausay Wasi Hospital, then the next day spend a day in the highland community of Misminay, where Andean family and farming life continues.

Meet a herbalist at San Pedro Market, then local healers at Huasao, to see how traditional and modern medicine coexist.

Cruise to the Uros Floating Islands and the island of Amantani, home to communities known for their textiles, pottery and stone carvings.

Longer and fuller days. More walking and longer distances require more energy, good fitness, and mobility.
