About the tour

History, nursing and culture intertwine on this journey through Turkey and the Greek Islands. It would be hard to find such a concentration of historically significant nursing and medical sites anywhere else, amidst some of the richest culture and history in the world.

This specialist study tour will visit Florence Nightingale’s museum in Istanbul, where modern nursing was established, and review her singular contribution to nursing. You will visit Gallipoli and examine how the military shaped the nursing profession, with these structures still evident in modern nursing today. You will also visit your nursing peers in both Turkey and Greece with the opportunity to learn about their approaches to nursing and healthcare. Learn how Nightingale helped develop nursing in Turkey and learn of approaches to nursing and healthcare in Turkey and Greece today.

Travel from Istanbul to the beaches of Gallipoli and onto Pergamum, Izmir, Seljuk and the Greek island of Rhodes. Your journey encompasses thousands of years of medical history,including Florence Nightingale, the Gallipoli beach hospitals and the Knights of St John.

Cuisine is an important part of travel and we have included a number of local restaurants and culinary experiences that highlight the delicious flavours of Turkey and Greece. Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward

Tour leader, Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward RN, MMgt, FACN, FCHSM (HON), Wharton Fellow, FAICD is CEO of the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) and CEO of the Australian College of Nursing Foundation.

From humble beginnings, Kylie has gone on to become one of the most influential professional health leaders of the country and a formidable and passionate advocate for women, children, and equality.

Kylie has led a program of transformation at ACN, including raising awareness of the profession and building a legacy of nursing leadership, policy, advocacy and social impact, as well as creating hundreds of leadership and representation positions for nurses all across Australia.

Kylie has been awarded honorary professorships with seven leading Australian universities as well as being awarded several Fellowships, including a Wharton Fellow from the USA. She holds numerous board and national committee positions. She is known as a voice of authority and has been requested to give evidence in many Senate and Parliamentary Inquiries and the Aged Care Royal Commission.

In 2023, Kylie was awarded a Commendation from the Chief of the Defence Force, for her exceptional devotion to military nurses and for being instrumental in raising the statue of Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel at the Australian War Memorial.

Kylie is a multi-award winner. In 2022, Kylie was named National Winner of Executive / Team Leader of the Year and Overall National Winner, Outstanding Leadership Awards. She was previously named Telstra ACT Business Woman of the Year for Purpose and Social Enterprise. A keen traveller, Kylie led both the highly successful Nursing Study Tour to South Africa in 2022, and the Nursing Study Tour to Vietnam in 2023.

Itinerary at a glance

  • Day 1: Istanbul (Sun, 15 Sept) Arrive Istanbul and transfer to hotel. Enjoy a welcome dinner in the evening.
  • Day 2: Istanbul (Mon, 16 Sept) Istanbul’s history is as richly layered as one of its baklava pastries. Visit the beautiful Blue Mosque. Continue to Scutari Barracks, where Florence Nightingale tended thousands of Turkish and Allied soldiers during the Crimean War, and visit the museum dedicated to her in the northwest tower. a talk on Nursing History in Turkey from Professor Yesim Isil Ulman. Visit the Hagia Sophia, one of Byzantine Istanbul’s most imposing sights. Explore the Grand Bazaar, a labyrinth of colourful stalls and shops selling everything from kilims to coffee pots, before a welcome dinner.
    Day 3: Istanbul (Tues, 17 Sept) Visit the Acibadem Teaching Hospital to meet with nurses and learn about nursing in Turkey today. Continue on a food tour sampling Istanbul’s superb cuisine. Late afternoon cruise on the Bosphorus.
  • Day 4: Istanbul / Gallipoli (Wed, 18 Sept) Depart from Istanbul and drive to Gallipoli. Transfer to the hotel. Visit the battlefields of Gallipoli, including Anzac Cove and the Australian cemetery.
  • Day 5: Gallipoli / Izmir (Thurs, 19 Sept) Visit Gallipoli beach and walk to the site of Number 1 Casualty Clearing Station. Visit the UNESCO-listed World Heritage site of Troy, the site of the legendary Trojan horse. Drive to the spectacular ruins of Pergamum, once a great Greek city, which tower one thousand feet above the city with superb views in all directions. Continue to Izmir.
  • Day 6: Izmir / Seljuk (Fri, 20 Sept) Visit Ege University Faculty of Nursing in Izmir to learn about contemporary nursing education in Turkey. Drive to Seljuk.
  • Day 7: Seljuk (Sat, 21 Sept) Full day visit in Ephesus, the best-preserved classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean and unmatched in its sheer magnitude. Ephesus’ history stretches back thousands of years and it possessed one of the Wonders of the Ancient World in its magnificent Temple to Artemis. Dinner in a village restaurant.
  • Day 8: Seljuk (Sun, 22 Sept) Full day at leisure in Seljuk. Dinner in a local restaurant.
  • Day 9: Seljuk / Rhodes (Tues, 23 Sept) Drive to the lovely seaside resort of Marmaris. Take the ferry to Rhodes, which is one of the showpiece Greek islands, with an exquisitely preserved medieval city that was the legacy of the crusading Knights of St John, based here from 1309-1522. Check in to your hotel.
  • Day 10: Rhodes (Wed, 24 Sept) Visit a Greek hospital and meet with the local nurses. Enjoy a delicious lunch with fresh ingredients at a local taverna. Take a half day tour of Rhodes including the Street of the Knights, the Grand Master’s Palace and the hospital of St John, now a museum.
  • Day 11: Rhodes (Thurs, 25 Sept) Drive to the charming port town Lindos the following day, stopping on the way at Butterfly Valley, a cool, green retreat for thousands of butterflies. In Lindos visit the Acropolis and old town before a taverna lunch. At leisure in the town or on the beach before returning to Rhodes.
  • Day 12: Rhodes (Fri, 26 Sept) Full day at leisure. Enjoy a farewell dinner in the evening.
  • Day 13: Rhodes (Sat, 27 Sept) Depart Rhodes after breakfast.
