About the tour

China has a long history of pharmacy and herbal medicine. This tour takes you on a historical journey from China’s traditional pharmacies and herbalists to the modern day, where traditional pharmacy combines very effectively with Western medicine. You will also visit Materia Medica, a research institution in Shanghai for drug discovery, often derived from traditional Chinese medicines. 

Gain fascinating insight into China’s traditional and contemporary culture and society along the way as you visit a great cross section of this extraordinary country. Starting in China's great imperial city, Beijing, travel to the ancient Silk Road crossroads of Xian, to see the magnificent Terracotta Warriors. Continue to tranquil Guangxi Province with its spectacualr mountain landscapes, onto the 2,500 water town of Suhou - famed for its gardens, its canals and its silk - and finally finishing in China's most cutting edge and glamorous city, Shanghai.

  • 14 Oct (Sat) Beijing: Arrive Beijing and transfer to the hotel. Orientation tour and dinner
  • 15 Oct (Sun) Beijing: Visit the Summer Palace. Visit the Great Wall. Peking Roast Duck dinner
  • 16 Oct (Mon) Beijing: Visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Walking tour of the hutongs of old Beijing.   Optional Beijing Acrobats
  • 17 Oct (Tues) Beijing: Visit Tong Reng Tang, a pharmacy founded in 1669 that prescribes both Western and Chinese medicine. Visit the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). Visit the Medical History Museum. Tour the Pharmacology Department and pharmacy.  Talk: “A History of National Pharmacopoeias” - Stuart Anderson
  • 18 Oct (Wed) Beijing / Xian:  Take the high speed train to Xian and transfer to the hotel. Option to see traditional Tang Dynasty Theatre
  • 19 Oct (Thurs) Xian: Optional early morning tai chi. Return for breakfast. Visit the Terracotta Warriors. Visit to the old city walls and the Calligraphy Street Market. Visit the night market 
  • 20 Oct (Fri) Xian / Guangxi Province: Visit Hospital of Chinese Medicine and tour departments of acupuncture, massage and herbal medicine and their three pharmacies (Western, Chinese, Pre-Packaged Herbal). Fly to Guilin
  • 21 Oct (Sat) Guangxi Province: Enjoy scenic cruise along the stunning Li River to the village of Yangshuo and at leisure. Optional outing to the spectacular son et lumière show in the evening
  • 22 Oct (Sun) Guangxi Province: Cycle or buggy ride through the countryside past farms, villages and visit the “barefoot doctor” and her rural clinic.  At leisure or optional cookery class. Evening talk: “A History of Pharmacy in China” by Stuart Anderson
  • 23 Oct (Mon) Guangxi Province / Suzhou: Fly from Guilin to Shanghai. Transfer to the ancient water town of Suzhou
  • 24 Oct (Tues) Suzhou / Shanghai: Visit the Master of the Nets Garden, the silk workshop and museum. Drive to Shanghai
  • 25 Oct (Wed) Shanghai: Visit Fudan University School of Pharmacy. Introduction to course curriculum and exchange with faculty members. Visit the Traditional Chinese Medicine University and Museum
  • 26 Oct (Thurs) Shanghai: Visit the Shanghai Museum and People's Square, walk along Nanjing Road and walking tour of Old Shanghai. Explore Tian Zi Fang and the French Concession. Farewell dinner    
  • 27 Oct (Fri) Shanghai: Transfer to the airport for return flight
