About the tour

South Africa is a spectacularly beautiful country. With its fine wines and superb food, magnificent scenery and distinctive local culture, it has much to offer the visitor. Travel from Cape Town to Tembe Elephant Park and KwaZulu Natal, to Hazyview and finish in Johannesburg.

This tour has been designed to follow on from the World Federation of Occupational Therapists Congress in Cape Town in 2018. There are a range of professional visits during the tour as well as many opportunities to learn about South Africa's culture and history and simply enjoy its food, wine and scenery.

Kit Sinclair PhD is an international education consultant in the areas of occupational therapy service and curriculum development. As a founding faculty member of the occupational therapy education programme in Hong Kong, she has played an active role in occupational therapy professional development in Hong Kong, and continued in senior academic and research posts for over 35 years.

Since the 1980s, Kit has been passionately involved in the development of rehabilitation and occupational therapy in the People's Republic of China. Teaching and consultancies have taken her to China's principal cities, provincial capitals and rural hospitals and clinics where resources and expertise are often extremely limited. She was involved in rehabilitation for survivors of the 2008 SiChuan earthquake and continues her commitment in international disaster management.

Kit served as President of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists from 2002-2008 and retains the title of WFOT Ambassador. She is an Honorary Fellow of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association. She is editor of the prestigious WFOT Bulletin.

A leader in the field, Kit has given many guest lectures and workshops around the world and has been instrumental in global and national policy development in relation to rehabilitation and disability in collaboration with WHO and national governments.

Itinerary at a glance

  • 25 May (Fri) Cape Town: For those attending the congress make your way in the morning to the groups hotel (09:00). Visit the town ship of Khayelisha and see the work that NGOs are doing there through occupational therapy, as well as other health care work. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon with time to relax before the welcome dinner
  • 26 May (Sat) Cape Town: Head into the winelands and visit the Delheim wine estate where there will be a tour along with tastings. The afternoon will be at leisure in Cape Town.
  • 27 May (Sun) Cape Town/Durban/Tembe Elephant Park: Take an early morning flight to Durban on the east coast of the country and drive to Tembe Elephant Park, stopping at St.Lucia for a cruise on the lake on the way
  • 28 May (Mon) Tembe Elephant Park: Visit Manguzi Hospital and meet with occupational therapists. In the afternoon go on a community walk around Manguzi with home vists to patients. Return to the Park in the late afternoon
  • 29 May (Tues) Tembe Elephant Park: Today enjoy the wildlife of the Elephant park with a morning game drive before breakfast. The rest of the morning is at leisure to relax or visit the hide near the waterhole. There will be another game drive after lunch
  • 30 May (Wed) Tembe Elephant Park/ Hazyview: Drive back to Durban for the flight to Mmpumalanga and transfer to the Hippo Hollow hotel in Hazyview. Your afternoon is at leisure to relax or take a late afternoon game drive into Kruger National Park
  • 31 May (Thurs) Hazyview: Visit to Wits Rural Facility to meet with the staff. See the work they are doing within the rural communitites. Continue to Tsintswalo Hospital and meet with occupational therapists
  • 1 June (Fri) Hazyview: the day starts with a game drive in Kruger National Park looking for the Big Five. Afterwards drive the Panorama route visiting God's window, Bourke's Luck Pot Holes and Blyde River Canyon. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon and enjoy a Shangaan dinner at the hotel that evening
  • 2 June (Sat) Hazyview/ Johannesburg: Drive to Johannesburg taking in the changing scenery from safari country to city. Visit the De Wildt Cheetah Rehabilitation Sanctuary. Continue to Johannesburg and arrive at the hotel
  • 3 June (Sun) Johannesburg: Visit the Apartheid Museum in the morning followed by lunch in and a tour of Soweto. There will be a farewell dinner in the evening
  • 4 June (Mon) Johannesburg: The day is at leisure until its time to make your way to the airport for the flight home. Alternitively continue your travels with an extension to the stunning Victoria Falls
