About the tour

This nursing study tour will show you the many faces of this beautiful and diverse land. Travel from Johannesburg into the safari country of Kruger National Park, along the world famous 'Panorama Route' through spectacular landscapes and end in the cosmopolitan harbour city of Cape Town. Your journey is punctuated with regular professional visits, providing insight into the social issues surrounding nursing in South Africa.

There is also the option to visit Victoria Falls* before the tour starts or extend your stay in Cape Town at the end.

This tour is recommended by the Australian College of Nursing.

* Depending on the flights you choose, you may need an extra night in either Johannesburg or Victoria Falls; if so, we can organise additional accommodation for you at the tour hotels.

Marilyn Gendek RN FACN

Marilyn is a Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing and is currently practising privately as a nursing consultant in continuing education and regulation. She grew up in New Zealand and undertook her nursing course at Auckland Public Hospital before travelling overseas and settling on undertaking postgraduate education at the Royal Marsden Hospital London. Over the 40 years of her nursing career, Marilyn has also specialised in nurse education from hospital-based programs to University, and nurse regulation in Australia with international links. She is embedded in nursing history and is the Chairperson of the Australian College of Nursing history group, a nursing philatelist, and family historian. Marilyn is co-editor and author of the book Why the World Needs Nurses: An Anthology of Perspectives and is a reviewer for the International Nursing Review. She has presented at and participated in international nursing conferences and initiatives. At the ICN 24th Quadrennial Congress in Durban, Marilyn was invited by the International Council of Nurses to mount a display of stamps and ephemera commemorating Florence Nightingale for the 75th anniversary of the Florence Nightingale International Foundation.

Itinerary at a glance

  • 10 March (Wed) Johannesburg: Arrive into Johannesburg and check into the Garden Court Sandton City Hotel. In the afternoon there will be a tour of the Apartheid Museum and panoramic sightseeing tour of Johannesburg. In the evening there will be a welcome dinner at the hotel
  • 11 March (Thurs) Johannesburg: Visit Jabulani Hospital in Soweto and meet with the nurses who work there. Lunch will be at a local shebeen, before a tour of Soweto. Visit Baragwanath taxi rank, Freedom Square and Nelson Mandela's former home.
  • 12 Mar (Fri) Johannesburg/ Timbavati Safari Lodge: Visit Netcare Private hospital and meet with its nurses, see the contrast in health care and facilities between public and private hospitals in South Africa. Drive to Mpumalanga safari country. Arrive at Timbavati Safari lodge in the afternoon with time to relax before dinner
  • 13 Mar (Sat) Timbavati Safari Lodge: Set out before sunrise in an open top safari vehicle with qualified game rangers to view the 'big five' on a game drive in Kruger National Park. Enjoy a bush lunch before continuing with the game drive
  • 14 Mar (Sun) Timbavati Safari Lodge: Enjoy an early morning bush walk before returning to the lodge for breakfast. Visit a Shangaan village and see its local clinic, trading store, primary school and homes. Meet with the locals and traditional healer. The afternoon is at leisure to relax at the lodge or take part in an optional sun downer game drive. That evening there will be a traditional Boma dinner under the stars.
  • 15 Mar (Mon) Timbavati Safari Lodge/ Hazyview: Depart the lodge for Hazyview. Visit the Tshemba Foundation on the way and see its work at the Tintswalo Hospital. Arrive at the hotel in the afternoon.
  • 16 Mar (Tues) Hazyview: Today will be a full day tour of the Panorama Route including God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondavels and the historic gold rush town of Pilgrims Rest.
  • 17 Mar (Wed) Hazyview: Today is at leisure to relax at the hotel or take optional game drives into Kruger National Park.
  • 18 Mar (Thurs) Hazyview/ Cape Town: Today is a travelling day but one with fantastic views and a great lunch stop. We drive to the airport in Johannesburg with a lovely lunch stop before taking a flight to Cape Town. Transfer from the hotel to your Cape Town hotel in the evening.
  • 19 Mar (Fri) Cape Town: Visit the University of Cape Town School of Nursing. Meet with staff and see the facilities. Enjoy a Braai lunch at Lelapa. Visit Langa, Cape Town's oldest township. Walk through the community seeing the spaza shops and shebeens, a local clinic, school, community centre and craft market.
  • 20 Mar (Sat) Cape Town: Today there will be a full day tour of the beautiful Cape Peninsula, starting with a trip up Table Mountain for spectacular views. Drive past the beaches of Clifton and Campus Bay en route to Hout Bay. Continue to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Return to Cape Town in the late afternoon. There will be a farewell dinner on the waterfront
  • 21 Mar (Sun) Cape Town: The tour will end after breakfast. The day is at leisure until your flight. Alternatively you can extend your stay in Cape Town to further explore the area and the winelands

Victoria Falls Pre-Tour extension

  • 7 Mar (Sun) Victoria Falls: Fly to Victoria Falls on a mid morning flight. Land in Victoria Falls and transfer to the A'Zambezi River Lodge Hotel. The afternoon is at leisure
  • 8 Mar (Mon) Victoria Falls: Enjoy breakfast at the hotels open-sided Amulonga Restaurant and then head to the astonishing Victoria Falls for a tour with your guide. The afternoon is at leisure before a sunset cruise on the river
  • 9 Mar (Tues) Victoria Falls/ Johannesburg: Transfer to Victoria Falls airport for the flight to Johannesburg. Arrive into Johannesburg mid-afternoon and transfer to the Garden Court Sandton City Hotel. Your evening is at leisure. The main tour will start the following day.
