About the tour

This nursing study tour, run in conjunction with the Florence Nightingale Fellowship, is designed to commemorate the 201st anniversary year of Florence Nightingale’s birth. It takes you on a journey through China’s history, landscapes and culture alongside a full professional programme. Explore nursing and health care in China while visiting China’s great sites on a ten-night tour. Journey from imperial Beijing onto the Silk Roadcity of Xi’an, home of the magnificent Terracotta Warriors. Travel by high speed train to historic Nanjing and end your tour in the dynamic city of Shanghai.

In Beijing see the Temple of Heaven and visit the Great Wall, Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. In Xi’an see the Terracotta Warriors, old markets and temples. In Nanjing visit one of the greatest museums in China and finish the tour enjoying the chic French Concession in Shanghai.

Your journey includes specialist visits to hospitals, a traditional pharmacy, a community nursing clinic and the Nanjing Nightingale Nursing College in Nanjing. You will also visit a city hospital in Xi’an to see how Traditional Chinese Medicine is used. Gain real insight into nursing and the social issues surrounding your profession in China.

​Zhang Zhong Jiu

Zhang Zhong Jiu (known as John) has worked with Jon Baines since 1994, taking healthcare, education, other professional groups and cultural groups around China. Educated in Beijing and London and widely travelled, John is extremely knowledgeable and popular with our groups for his warmth and sense of humour, as well as his ability to bring China’s history and society to life with personal anecdotes. Having led a wide variety of professional groups over so many years, his breadth of knowledge is second to none.

  • 16 Oct (Sun) Beijing: Arrive and check into Fu Li Holiday Inn Express, Beijing. Option to visit the Temple of Heaven. Welcome dinner
  • 17 Oct (Mon) Beijing: Visit the Summer Palace. Visit the Great Wall. Peking Roast Duck dinner
  • 18 Oct (Tues) Beijing: Visit the historic Tong Ren Tang Pharmacy. Continue to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Visit a community nursing clinic. Option to see the Beijing Acrobats
  • 19 Oct (Wed) Beijing / Xi’an: Fly from Beijing to Xi’an and transfer to the Nan Qu Jiang Holiday Inn Express. Visit the old city walls and the Calligraphy Museum. Optional Tang Dynasty Theatre
  • 20 Oct (Thurs) Xi’an: Visit the Terracotta Warriors. Visit the Xi’an City Hospital of Chinese Medicine: visit departments of Herbal Medicine, Massage and Acupuncture. Visit the evening market & visit a local tea shop
  • 21 Oct (Fri) Xi’an / Nanjing: Take the high-speed train to Nanjing and transfer to the Xuan Wu Hu Holiday Inn Express. Visit the Nanjing Nightingale Nursing College within the Nanjing Health School, Jiangbei campus
  • 22 Oct (Sat) Nanjing: Visit the Nanjing Museum. At leisure
  • 23 Oct (Sun) Nanjing: Visit the Ming Dynasty city walls, Zhonghuamen Gate and the Ming tombs. Cruise along the Qinhuai River
  • 24 Oct (Mon) Nanjing / Shanghai: Take the local train to Shanghai and check into the Wu Jiao Chang Holiday Inn Express. Visit the Yu Gardens and the elegant Bund
  • 25 Oct (Tues) Shanghai: Visit the French Concession, Tian Xi Fang and old Shanghai. At leisure. Farewell dinner
  • 26 Oct (Wed) Shanghai: Depart for airport or take the Guangxi Provience extension

Guangxi Province Extension

Guangxi Province has been a favourite of Chinese artists throughout the ages due to its spectacularly beautiful landscapes. Fly from Shanghai to Guilin and spend the afternoon enjoying the sites of the city including the river front and many galleries. Next morning enjoy a scenic cruise along the stunning Li River to the cobblestone town of Yangshuo. Spend the rest of your day at leisure to enjoy the charms of the town and its lovely surroundings. There is an optional class teaching how to cook mouth-watering and highly spiced Sichuan cuisine. While here you may take a cycle ride through the local villages or explore the local surroundings. In the evening there is the option to see a spectacular son et lumière show. Fly from Guilin to Shanghai or to Hong Kong.

Tour cost

Tour cost is US $2,146 pp sharing (excluding international flights and transfers). The cost of the Guangxi Province extension is US $1,232 pp sharing (excluding international flights and transfers).
