About the tour

Travel through an island brimming with historical treasures and natural beauty as you learn about the important role of midwives in the primary healthcare system of Sri Lanka. Professional visits encompass hospitals - including a maternity hospital, a children’s teaching hospital and an Ayurvedic Hospital - a children’s centre and rural health clinics. Learn about education and training for midwives and gain real insight into Sri Lankan midwifery, childcare and society. A cultural programme includes visits to mystical ruins, jungles, tropical beaches, national parks with huge herds of elephants, vivid green mountains, as well as mouthwatering cuisine. There is an extension to the beautiful city of Galle after the tour.

Ruth King

Ruth King is the Midwifery Advisor, Education Unit for the Australian College of Midwives (ACM), the peak professional body for Midwives in Australia, a role she has held for over 5 years. In her spare time she works clinically as a midwife through Your Nursing Agency at a variety of maternity services around South Australia.  Prior to working for the ACM Ruth worked in a midwifery continuity of care caseload model at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide.  In this time she completed her Honours looking at practices and perspectives of women eating during labour, achieving a 1st Class. 

Ruth has travelled widely around Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe and has a travel bucket list that she and her family are slowly working on every year.

Itinerary at a glance

  • 15 Sept (Sun) Colombo: Arrive Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer to the Galle Face Hotel Colombo. Welcome dinner at the hotel’s Veranda Restaurant
  • 16 Sept (Mon) Colombo: Visit Colombo Maternity Hospital. Enjoy a foot massage at the Siddhalepa Ayurveda Hospital and travel by rickshaw back to the hotel. Dinner at Upali’s by Nawaloka
  • 17 Sept (Tues) Colombo / Habaran: Visit the Rainbow Children’s Centre. Drive from Colombo to Habarana. Visit the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala on the way. Arrive and check into the Cinnamon Lodge Habarana. Dinner at hotel
  • 18 Sept (Wed) Habarana: After breakfast visit the legendary sky citadel of Sigiriya, famous for the 'Lion Rock' and its frescoes of ‘Celestial Maidens'. Visit a local village, including its local health clinic. Take part in a cookery demonstration using local spices followed by a delicious lunch. At leisure.
  • 19 Sept (Thurs) Habarana: Option to visit the ancient site of Ritigala, including the historic Ayurveda hospital, or at leisure. Visit Minneriya National Park and see large herds of elephants and huge flocks of birds
  • 20 Sept (Fri) Habarana / Trincomalee: Visit Polonnaruwa, the island's medieval capital between the 11th and 13th centuries. Built alongside a large ancient artificial lake, there are well-preserved ruins of palaces, bathing pools, stupas and exquisite rock sculptures. Continue to Trincomalee and at leisure at Trinco Blu by Cinnamon
  • 21 Sept (Sat) Trincomalee: Visit Trincomalee Hospital. Explore the historic and cultural attractions and the markets. Dinner at the hotel
  • 22 Sept (Sun) Trincomalee: Early morning option to view sea mammals. Full day at leisure
  • 23 Sept (Mon) Trincomalee / Kandy: Drive to Kandy, visiting the cave temples of Dambulla en route. Visit the spice plantations of Matale where nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper are grown and enjoy a delicious Sri Lankan lunch. Arrive Kandy and transfer to the Cinnamon Citadel and at leisure.
  • 24 Sept (Tues) Kandy: Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. See the blessing ceremony with drums, trumpets and brightly robed monks performing rituals. Explore Kandy including the historic Garrison Cemetery followed by drinks at the Suisse Hotel (the former home of Lord Mountbatten). Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight
  • 25 Sept (Wed) Kandy: Visit Peradeniya Children’s Hospital and learn of education and training. Continue to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, including plantations of coffee, tea, rubber and cinchona and the orchid house along with medicinal herbal section. Visit the beautifully landscaped Kandy War Cemetery. Visit the gemstone market and gem workshops and at leisure.
  • 26 Sept (Thurs) Kandy / Nuwara Eliya: Scenic train journey across the highlands to Nuwara Eliya. Check into the Grand Hotel and orientation tour of the colonial hill station. Dinner at the hotel.
  • 27 Sept (Fri) Nuwara Eliya: Visit the Somerset Tea Estate and their clinic. At leisure. High tea in the garden of the Grand Hotel. Dinner at the Hill Club
  • 28 Sept (Sat) Nuwara Eliya / Colombo: Drive to Colombo. Arrive and transfer to the Galle Face Hotel. Farewell dinner at Paradise Road Gallery Café
  • 29 Sept (Sun) Colombo: Depart for the airport or join extension to Galle.

Extension to Galle

  • 29 Sept (Sun) Colombo/Galle: Scenic drive along the coast to Galle. Visit the Lunuganga Estate and gardens en route.
