About the tour

This tour through the Holy Land allows participants to experience both the historical treasures and modern cosmopolitan society contained within this relatively small land. Travel from Tel Aviv to Galilee, Jericho and Jerusalem, a sacred city to countless millions across the world. Examine approaches to dentistry and medicine with a range of professional visits that provide insight into the medical and dental systems and challenges within this region. There will also be specialist talks from both tour leaders and speakers throughout the itinerary.

Prof. Phillip Dowell and Paul Johnson

Professor Phillip Dowell qualified at The London Hospital and after a number of hospital jobs entered general practice. Some years later, after working in the West Indies, he won an international fellowship to study at the Eastman Dental Centre in the USA. He continued his post graduate studies at the University of Wales College of Medicine and subsequently taught both undergraduates and postgraduates in the area of periodontology. He is a specialist periodontist and past president of the British Society of Periodontology. Phillip Dowell has lectured both nationally and internationally and is the author of many publications. He is visiting professor at the University of Surrey and a past European President for the International College of Dentists. He has led highly successful tours to China, Ecuador, South Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia and around the Mediterranean.

Paul Johnson qualified in dentistry in Leeds in 1979 and medicine in Cambridge in 1984. He was appointed consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. He lectures widely on maxillofacial and facial plastic surgery. In private practice he specialises in oral surgery, implantology and facial cosmetic surgery. Paul is experienced at leading dental tours for Jon Baines Tours.

Itinerary at a glance

  • 7 Sept (Sat) Tel Aviv: Arrive and transfer to the hotel. Welcome dinner
  • 8 Sept (Sun) Tel Aviv: Visit Jaffa and learn of the history of this ancient port city. Continue to the Wolfson Medical Centre in Holon meet with representatives of Save a Child's Heart, an Israeli NGO. Return to Tel Aviv and visit a medical and dental community clinic or at leisure. Welcome dinner
  • 9 Sept (Mon) Tel Aviv / Galilee: Visit Caesarea. Travel to Acre and explore the history of the city including the Knights Halls of Hospitaller Order. Continue to Galilee. Talk: “How to remove an arrow from the face - lessons from history” by Dr Paul Johnson
  • 10 Sept (Tues) Galilee: Visit Ziv Hospital and departmental visits. Continue to explore the ancient city of Safed. Boat trip on the lake and visit the sites of Tabgha and Capernaum. Wine tasting and dinner at a winery
  • 11 Sept (Wed) Galilee: Visit the Beit HaRofeh Museum (early kibbutz). Visit Nazareth including the Basilica of Annunciation, St Joseph’s Church. Free time to explore the town and at the market before returning to the hotel for talks:

  • 12 Sept (Thurs) Galilee / Jericho: Drive along the Jordan Valley to Jericho. Take a cable car up Mount Temptation. Visit Qumran and the local caves and learn of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Continue to the Dead Sea for a float. Evening talk: “Dealing with Workplace Stress” Dr Sheila Stork and dinner with traditional music
  • 13 Sept (Fri) Jericho / Jerusalem: Visit Masada, Herod’s Hilltop Palace and Fortress by cable car. Continue to Jerusalem. Late afternoon visit to the Western Wall to witness the Shabbat prayers.
  • 14 Sept (Sat) Jerusalem: Visit the Mount of Olives. Continue into the Josaphat Valley to visit the Pater Noster Church, Dominus Flevit, the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations. Enter the Old City and see the Pool of Bathsheba. Pass through the narrow winding streets to visit the Studium Bilblicum Franciscum (a 17thcentury pharmacy). Continue to the Via Dolorosa. Follow the Stations of the Cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Onto the slopes of Mount Zion, and visit the tomb of King David, the beautiful Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition and the Cenacle, which since the 4th century has been identified as the site of the Last Supper.
  • 15 Sept (Sun) Jerusalem: Visit East Jerusalem and see the Augusta Victoria Hospital and learn of its German, Ottoman, British, Palestinian history. Visit the Israel Museum and the Shrine of the Book, (home of the Dead Sea Scrolls parchments and the largest museum to all things Israeli anywhere on the planet). Pass by Ein Karem and visit the Church of St John the Baptist, and onto Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity. Farewell dinner
  • 16 Sept (Mon) Jerusalem / Tel Aviv: At leisure until departing for airport, or take the Petra extension

Extension to Jordan

  • 16 Sept (Mon) Jerusalem / Amman: Drive to the Sheikh Hussain border and cross into Jordan. Continue to Jordan and Amman
  • 17 Sept (Tues) Amman / Petra: Visit Bethany, the Baptismal site of Christ, and Mount Nebo. Lunch by the Dead Sea and option to float. Continue onto Petra and check into the Petra Palace Hotel
  • 18 Sept (Wed) Petra: Full day’s visit in Petra. Free time in the afternoon, dinner at hotel
  • 19 Sept (Thurs) Petra / Wadi Rum / Amman: Drive into the desert scenery of Wadi Rum and jeep safari through the desert. Return to Amman
  • 20 Sept (Fri) Amman / UK: Depart Jordan
