About the tour

Get into the festive spirt of London at Christmas with a grand tour of the best places to shop in town. Visit the Museum of Brands to examine the history of consumer culture and learn of the Marvellous Mr Selfridge. Take a private tour examining the Royal Warrant Holders and continue through Mayfair and Jermyn Street for afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason. Enjoy a private wine tasting at Berry Brothers and Rudd, purveyors of wines and spirits to royalty, and explore the lively markets of Spitalfields and Columbia Road Flower Market. Head off the beaten track and learn the history of the John Bell & Croyden Pharmacy and Kings Cross Coal Drop Yards. Take part in a 'secret shopping' tour of some lesser-known retail gems of London and shop until you drop.

The tour provides options including accommodation or without accommodation. The hotel is the Royal Society of Medicine's Domus Medica, located on the first floor of the RSM on the corner of Wimpole Street and Wigmore Street in Marylebone.

Janice Liverseidge

Until recently Janice Liverseidge was Director of Membership at The Royal Society of Medicine and is now a full time guide and in her spare time a trustee of both the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund and the London Handel Festival. Earlier in her career she worked for the British Medical Association. She is also a registered Blue Badge tourist guide and regularly leads groups in London on medical history walks, tours of the Wellcome Collection and other healthcare locations plus provides music and art tours for the Foundling Museum and the London Handel Festival. Janice has travelled extensively, including an eight month journey around India, South East Asia and Australia, and has led highly successful RSM tours to Vietnam and Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Cuba, South Africa and China.

Janice has the Visit Britain "Good to Go" Industry standard demonstrating that she has shown her compliance with government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, has a Risk Assessment in place and ensures social distancing including using a phone app when providing tour commentaries.

Itinerary at a glance

  • Day 1: London (Fri, 10 Dec) Lights, Christmas and Wrapping Check into Domus Medica at the Royal Society of Medicine and meet your tour leader, Janice Liverseidge. Travel to Notting Hill to visit the Museum of Brands, which examines the history of consumer culture from Victorian times to the present day. Take part in a Christmas lights walk, starting in Marylebone, continuing on to walk down to Piccadilly, ending at Trafalgar Square.
  • Day 2: London (Sat, 11 Dec) Silver, Gentry, Groceries and Wine Start the morning with an optional early optional walking tour to the London Silver Vaults, a large subterranean market that opened as The Chancery Lane Safe Deposit on 7 May 1885. Originally renting out strong rooms to hold household silver, jewellery and documents, it transitioned to housing silver dealers in secure premises a few years later. Join Later join your tour leader on a walking tour of the Royal Warrant Holders, including Savile Row and St James, Mayfair. Promenade down Jermyn Street, known for gentlemen's clothing retailers, before a classic afternoon tea at Fortum and Mason. Stroll to St James’ and Berry Bros. and Rudd, a family-run British wine and spirits merchant founded in London in 1698, for an exclusive, expert led wine tasting and tour. Optional dinner at Anacapri.
  • Day 3: London (Sun, 12 Dec) Markets, Modern Retail and the Marvellous
    Mr Selfridge Start the day at Spitalfields in the lively East
    End, today home to artists and creatives. Explore nearby markets, including Columbia Road Flower Market, before continuing to Kings Cross Coal Drop Yards, a new and exciting shopping complex and privately owned public space that forms part of the Kings Cross Central development scheme. Learn about the Kings Cross redevelopment and its history involving Thomas Cubbitt, a master builder, innovative property developer and friend of royalty in the nineteenth century. After lunch participate on a secret shopping tour, visiting the lesser known Chiltern Street and Alfies Antique Market in Church Street, before ending at iconic Selfridges. Cocktails at the RSM and optional dinner at the Brasserie of Light.
  • Day 4: London (Mon, 13 Dec) Pharmacies and Ointments Visit Wigmore Street for a private tour of John Bell & Croyden, a Royal Warrant Holder pharmacy which produces the anointing oil for coronations. The company dates from 1798 and has been based on its current premises since 1912.

Tour cost

The cost of the tour for RSM members is £690 per person sharing. The cost for non RSM Members is £740 per person sharing.
