About the tour

The 2021 Pierre Fauchard Academy Induction Ceremony for new fellows will take place on September 18th in Scotland, at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Attendees will have the opportunity to arrive early and enjoy dinner and whisky tasting at the Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh followed by a medical, dental and scientific themed walking tour of Edinburgh. After the convocation, there is also the opportunity to explore the highlands of Scotland over 5 days, with visits to Inverness, Oban and Stirling. Visit dramatic castles and historic sites, enjoy lunch with a Lady Laird and take part in Scotch whisky tastings.

Itinerary at a glance

Pre-Convocation Extension

17 - 18 Sept 2021

  • Day 1: Edinburgh (Fri 17 Sept) Arrive in Edinburgh and check in to Ten Hill Place hotel. Check in available from 3pm. Take a tour of the Scotch Whisky Experience followed by a 3-course welcome dinner with whiskey pairing.

  • Day 2: Edinburgh (Sat 18 Sept) Take a guided walking tour of the Old Town in Edinburgh and the historic buildings of the University of Edinburgh with historian Sheila Szatkowski, author of Enlightenment Edinburgh.

Post-Convocation Extension

19 – 24 Sept 2021

  • Day 1: Edinburgh / Inverness (Sun, 19 Sept) Depart Edinburgh en route to Inverness. See the famous Forth Bridge and drive through the Cairngorms National Park. Stop for whisky tasting. Continue to Inverness and check in to hotel and enjoy dinner.

  • Day 2: Inverness (Mon, 20 Sept) Take a full day tour of Inverness with specialist Ian Deveney with visits to Lochness, Urquhart Castle and Culloden Battlefield. Dinner at a restaurant in town.

  • Day 3: Inverness / Oban (Tues, 21 Sept) Depart Inverness and drive to the west coast to meet with the Lady Laird of Attadale House, Joanna MacPherson, one of a new breed of lady landowners challenging tradition in Scotland. Take a specialist guided tour of the gardens followed by lunch. Continue down to see Eilean Donan Castle, perched most attractively on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet. Continue on to Oban and check in to the hotel.
  • Day 4: Oban (Wed, 22 Sept) Take a scenic walk along the esplanade in Oban and visit Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds, seat of the Clan MacDougall for over 1000 years. In the afternoon, take a tour of Oban Distillery established in 1794 with whisky tasting. Return to the hotel for dinner with the rest of the evening at leisure.
  • Day 5: Oban / Edinburgh (Thurs, 23 Sept) Depart Oban and drive back to Edinburgh. En route, visit Stirling Castle, one of the largest and most important castles historically and architecturally in Scotland. Farewell dinner at Ten Hill Place that evening.
  • Day 6: Edinburgh (Fri, 24 Sept) Depart after breakfast. Check out by 12pm.
