About the tour

History, medicine and culture intertwine on this journey through Turkey and the Greek Islands. Nowhere else has such a concentration of important medical historical sites, amidst some of the richest culture and history in the world. Travel from Istanbul to the beaches of Gallipoli and onto Pergamum, Kos and Rhodes. Thousands of years of medical history are covered, including Florence Nightingale, the Gallipoli beach hospitals, Hippocrates, Galen and the Knights of St John.

Dr Matt Young

Dr Matt Young has been a GP for over 25 years. His practice at Medeco Inala won the RACGP Australian GP of the Year in 2018 and acts as the home base for his mobile Hep C eradication crusade, the Hep C Kombi project which he co-founded.

As well as medicine Matt loves travelling the globe and has visited over 100 countries across all seven continents. He has a deep fascination with foreign cultures and loves immersing himself into their stories. He is most at home rafting rivers, climbing mountains and hiking through jungles.

Having completed an Archaeology Degree (UQ) and History Diploma (UQ). His areas of special interest are Australian WW1 history and ancient civilisations. Matt finds these studies significantly enhance all his intrepid travelling experiences. Matt writes for the AMAQ’s Doctor Q magazine and worked on 4BC as the Ocker Doctoron radio talk back. He loves a yarn, a laugh and writing poetry for fun.

He has been Souths Rugby Union club doctor for 17 years and has captained Brisbane’s Ned Flanders Cricket Club for over two decades, leading the team to international victories against national teams on every continent.

Itinerary at a glance

  • 8 Sept (Tues) Istanbul: Arrive Istanbul and check into the hotel. Welcome dinner in the evening
  • 9 Sept (Wed) Istanbul: Explore the historic city of Istanbul. Visit the Blue Mosque, Hippodrome and the Roman underground cistern. In the afternoon visit the Suleyman Mosque and its collection of rare medical manuscripts
  • 10 Sept (Thurs) Istanbul: Visit the Scutari Barracks and the Florence Nightingale Museum and see the old Kuleli Hospital. Continue with a visit to the Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar and end the day with a cruise on the Bosphorus
  • 11 Sept (Fri) Istanbul/Gallipoli: Depart Istanbul and drive to Gallipoli. In the afternoon visit the battlefields of Gallipoli including Anzac Cove and the Australian cemetery
  • 12 Sept (Sat) Gallipoli/Izmir: Optional dawn visit to Gallipoli. Walk along the beach to the site of Number 1 Casualty Clearing Station. Return to the hotel for breakfast. Visit the archaeological site of the city of Troy. In the afternoon drive to Pergamum and visit the Acropolis and Aesclepion. Continue to Izmir
  • 13 Sept (Sun) Izmir/Sardes/Selcuk: Visit Sardes, including the gymnasium and the Citadel. Drive to Selcuk and at leisure in the lovely village
  • 14 Sept (Mon) Selcuk: Full day visit to Ephesus
  • 15 Sept (Tues) Selcuk/Bodrum: Morning visit to the site at Miletus. Drive to Bodrum. Arrive mid afternoon and at leisure
  • 16 Sept (Wed) Bodrum/Kos/Bodrum: Morning ferry to Kos and visit Hippocrates' plane tree, the Aesclepium and the International Hippocrates Institute of Kos. Lunch at a taverna. Visit the Museum of Medicine. Return to Bodrum by ferry late afternoon
  • 17 Sept (Thurs) Bodrum/Rhodes: Take the morning ferry to Rhodes. Arrive Rhodes with the afternoon at leisure
  • 18 Sept (Fri) Rhodes: Morning walking tour of Rhodes Old Town visiting the Street of the Knights, the Grand Master's Palace and the hospital of the Knights of St. John (now a museum). Lunch at a local taverna with the rest of the afternoon at leisure to explore
  • 19 Sept (Sat) Rhodes: Drive to Butterfly Valley. Continue to the lovely town of Lindos. Lunch at a Lindean taverna. At leisure
  • 20 Sept (Sun) Rhodes/Bodrum: Take the ferry to Bodrum. The afternoon is at leisure to relax or continue to explore Bodrum. Farewell dinner in the evening
  • 21 Sept (Mon) Bodrum: the tour ends after breakfast
